LSM Academy Website Design Update & Icon Set

When this project eventually gets its own bespoke website I think it deserves a huge investment in how it looks and feels.

Obviously I started that a few days ago and since then, I have revised the design a great deal as well as started the task of creating the graphical elements I want to represent, and in some instances, replace text / data.

First of all an update on the website design:

As you can see, it’s come a long way since its original incarnation. The key differences are the swap between the green and light grey background sections. The reason behind this is the bottom section (now light grey) will contain more information and be quite long when fully populated and therefore require more text and associated imagery – which you can start to see as icons in this version.

Reading white / dark blue text on a green background is fine for a while but it starts to become tiring for your eyes whereas you can read dark blue text on an almost white background for much longer and in more comfort. Additionally, all the colourful icons and associate graphical elements I hope to develop will not clash against this background colour.

There is a slight clash now between the pinky-red calendar element and the green background but because of its size and the fact there will only ever be one instance of this, it should be fine. I also am aware that the green Dreamweaver (Dw) icon fails to contrast against the green background. As this is secondary information and one of 9 possible colour combinations, I am going to leave it for now. Maybe I could adjust the green in the Dw icon as I think the green background for the Next Workshop section is a good colour.

As usual, the full revision process is documented on Behance: http://www.behance.net/wip/193743

Finally, here is a preview of the icon set for the project:

It is still a work in progress and I am unhappy with some of the icons ability to communicate what they represent. I think the visual style and consistency in design are fine and they work at both large and small sizes, but I’m not sure some of them do their job properly so I am going to keep developing these alongside a few new screen designs.
